The Startup Recruiters – Part IV

The summer came, and Ali and I felt like we had it made in the shade. We couldn’t be happier with our progress as a startup and we got comfortable with the idea that as long as we stuck with our program, we’d have continued success, no matter what.  Well, needless to say, we were (and still are) young and naive and thought we knew everything there was to know about recruitment, when in reality, we simply knew how to work hard. So when we began to take some time for ourselves over the hot summer months, our business suffered mightily.

As the heat of summer rolled in, our hot streak grew cold. Between July, August and September, we made a single placement, and it was one of our smallest in months. That’s not to say we didn’t work our asses off, but we didn’t have the same motivation and drive and our business suffered because of it. Trust me, we knew what needed to be done, and we had ample opportunities to close deals, but when you’ve done well enough (to a certain extent), the drive to push forward subsides a bit and you feel like you can take a breather. We just lost our focus, and we had to find a way to get it back.

We both had amazing summers personally: Ali went home to Vancouver for the entire summer – something he hadn’t done in years – and I travelled a bit and spent a fair amount of time by the pool. We weren’t complaining. But when October rolled around, we took a long hard look at ourselves an realized we had done something terrible. We lost whatever momentum we had built up over the course of the year, and we’d be forced to essentially revisit our business model to once again find the magic.

We had one thing on our side at this point: experience. However small the sample size was, we knew we’d made some mistakes, and we could learn from them. Yes, they we’re avoidable mistakes, but like I said, we’re young, we’re ambitious, and sometimes a little careless. We knew now what needed to be done to ensure long-term success. The tide was about to turn in a very big way.
