The Startup Recruiters – Part VI

So, here we are. We made it to 2015. There were doubters, there were naysayers, there were those who didn’t believe. At times, we weren’t so sure we’d make it this far, either. But like I’ve been saying all along, hand work and perseverance have legitimate value in sales. The harder you push, the higher you’ll climb. It’s simple physics, really.

Coming out of the holiday season, our plate full of assignments had dwindled down to about 2 or 3, but there was one we were holding onto, and for good reason. It was that of a Director of Engineering in the Big Apple, a role that, should we close, would be our greatest achievement to date. Not only was the stature of the position imposing, but with it came a hefty price tag, something we’d been striving to reach for the past few months.

There are many hardships in recruitment. More up and downs than I can count. I’ve had to have a pretty short memory in this business. I don’t normally boast about this sort of thing, but let’s just say there are men and women stronger than I that would’ve walked away long ago because of all the rejections and shattered deals we’ve seen. Well, to them, I’d say thanks for trying, your efforts were appreciated. And then I’d show them the reason why I continue to forge on as a headhunter, and it begins and ends with the fee we earned on the placement of that Director of Engineering. Yep, we closed it! The whale we’d been waiting for. It took over 10 weeks of interviews, back and forth contract negotiations, and countless sleepless nights, but it was all worthwhile in the end.

Let me rephrase something I just said: it doesn’t ALL begin and end with the fee, however, without the fee, we’d have walked away from that deal 4 weeks earlier. The fee aside (though the fee is never truly aside), what we do here day in and day out is help startups reach new heights by acquiring talent they otherwise may have never found. We’ve helped a half dozens companies reach new funding deals, and the the hires we’ve helped make have led to countless other hires made in those people’s respective teams. The work we do has a healthy price tag on it, but it’s because our role has value in bringing these companies talent. Skilled individuals like these don’t peruse job boards, they don’t apply on their own. They’re happy in what they are doing, so it’s the job of The Startup Recruiters to show them that there are svn better opportunities out there. It’s what has made us so successful to this point, and what we hope will keep us at the top of our game.

There’s still more to this story, we’re not even at the highlight of our time spent in Montreal yet! Something amazing happened a short while after we closed the whale, and I don’t think Ali or myself really saw it coming. Will you?
